I still think there's a bit of Socialism in there!
It's nothing to be ashamed of!!!!!
Not ashamed of being who I am. Definitely not a socialist, but definitiely not a right wing conservative either.

I suspect, and I don't mean this in an antoganistic way, that it is as much about a misunderstanding of what Conservatism is about, especially because of the way it has been allowed to be hijacked by some and distorted by others.

As an example, Iain Duncan-Smith - who is seen as a real right winger, does this:

http://www.centreforsocialjustice.org.uk/

and is absolutely passionate about it.

I couldn't do what I do as Lead Member for Children without having compassion at the heart of my thinking. I deal with issues like Children in Care, poverty and deprivation day in, day out and I can say for absolute certainty that the biggest inroads in these areas historically have been made by Conservatives.

I would argue it is one of the reasons (I stress one of the reasons) why some of those areas that vote Labour automatically year in year out are where they are.

I have to say RFFB, I have much more sympathy with the US (and us) being in Afghanistan than I do about Iraq, which was an invasion based on a massive lie - in fact I resigned from a job over Iraq!!

We have an old WW2 air raid shelter at the back of our garden that's been filled in. After reading Maries' posts I think I'm going to start digging it out and wait for the apocalypse ! :(

Apologies for the slight hijack...
Don't think that's a hi-jack to be honest.

It's that sort of treatment to employees that boils my p*ss. If a company can make that sort of profit in a quarter and your job is still not safe...well that's a disgrace. Down to 'points!'. POINTS!!! What about how well she did the job? Good worker? Punctuality? No, it comes down to points.

Madness.
Was going to mention this when F.J announced his news, but didn't want to Hi-jack his thread.
Back in february we were given letters at work that basically said our jobs were being redefined and that job losses were inevitable.
Since that letter was issued there has been no communication with us whatsoever from the managment, despite numerous questions and prompting from our union.
Our lives have been on hold since then as no one is able to commit to anything as they don't know whether they are going to have a job or not !
Personally, Our outhouse roof is leaking and needs re-newing, don't want to spend money incase I lose my job.
Our car is old and needs re-newing, don't want to spend money incase I lose my job.
Our kitchen is looking tired and needs re-newing, don't want to spend money incase I lose my job.
The wife wants to book next years holiday ( I might be on a long one) but I don't want to book anything incase I lose my job!
Times that by the 50 or so workers that are all having the same sort of worries and you got a very unhappy depot.
Oh well, I shouldn't worry as according to Marie we haven't got long to go anyway !

This stuff sucks. Unfortunately I was advised by a major Housing Association on Monday that they expect at least a 3 year recession - so we ain't seen the half of it yet.

Pssst...the sun came here up today after all.

Marie, please take this in the spirit in which it is intended, but you've got big, cold, clankin' brass ones. Good for you!

I pretty much grew up in the Thatcher years. What I saw her do to the UK is what I base my understanding of Conservatism on. And that ain't a compliment!! It was all the yuppies and greed and take, take, take, me, me, me. "Greed is good" was branded around like crazy. The workers power base, the unions, were destroyed. It became an employers market. Unemployment was at unprecedented high in decades. Every time I went to my employer with a grievance the responce I got was, literally, "Well if you don't like it, fu*k off. There's plenty people out their who'll take your job!" And there was NOTHING I could about it....
skinnymartin wrote:I have to say RFFB, I have much more sympathy with the US (and us) being in Afghanistan than I do about Iraq, which was an invasion based on a massive lie - in fact I resigned from a job over Iraq!!
No arguement there. I do understand the reasons why the US and the Allies are in Afghanistan...but...it does create more tension in Islamic states towards the West. And every time another village gets bombed and civillians killed it's a disgrace and I'm sure, adds to the terrorist cause and ranks. I get the feeling that the US is using technology over sending in troops as it's safer for them. Not safer for the innocent people who are killed, who probably wouldn't have died if ground troops were used instead of some laser guided missile sent in on intelligence reports. Remember the saying, "Military intelligence, isn't that a contradiction of terms!"

Thanks.

It's good to know I'm not alone in thinking this stuff. I don't usually get this involved in stuff this heavy but I just had to say how I felt.
Sometimes you just have to stand up and be counted (cue Dio!!... )

Can't recall which member mentioned 'mind dumps!', but it does do you good to express your feelings sometimes!!!

Lets hope that the UK has a similarly high turnout when we have a general election. I can understands peoples apathy to a degree but it was a disgrace the trunout was so low.

Its good to see so many people passionate about important world events.

Hairychin - Its the same oin the bank at the moment lots of uncertainity and no leadershiop and questions not being answered. Someone on the radio says the best plan is to live now as if you will be made redundant in the near future. I totally agree this recession has a long way to run. Lets hope all hardworking decent folk manage to survive and fight another day.
