The late actor Heath Ledger has won a posthumous Oscar for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight.
Accepting the Best Supporting Actor award, Sally Bell, Ledger's mother said: "Heath was such a compassionate and generous soul who added so much excitement and inspiration to our lives.

"We have been truly overwhelmed by the honour and respect bestowed upon him with this award.

"Tonight we are choosing to celebrate and be happy for what he has achieved."

His father Kim said: "He was extremely talented and what always worried me as a parent was 'God Heath, you better find something and stick to it, because you might actually have to make a buck some day'.

"So, we didn't know which way he was going to go, but he said he had an immense passion for this."
