30 years ago today, a week after KISS destroyed Donington in 1996, I sat down and created a few pages of HTML dedicated to my favourite band.
I don't think for one second I imagined that those few pages would still be here 30 years later.
Back then, the internet was a very different place. There was no Facebook, no Instagram, no YouTube, no smartphones and certainly no AI to write the bloody thing for me! You basically needed to know a bit of HTML, find somewhere to host it and hope somebody actually found it.
Somehow, people did.
What started as a few pages quickly grew into KISSin' UK, and over the years it became a huge part of my spare time. There have been news stories, reviews, interviews, photos, concert reports, competitions, merchandise, bootlegs, rumours, arguments over setlists and probably far too much time spent talking about KISS!
And what a 30 years it's been.
I've been incredibly lucky to have had opportunities I could never have imagined when I first started the site. I've interviewed band members, attended backstage events, press conferences and after-show parties, appeared on The One Show, met members of the band and somehow managed to take KISS merchandise onto national television!
I've interviewed Ace, Peter and Mark St John, and had the chance to meet and spend time with Paul, Gene, Bruce, Eric and Tommy.
And then there are the people.
That's probably the biggest thing KISSin' UK has given me over the last 30 years.
I've made friends through this site who I would never otherwise have met. I've watched people meet through the old KISSin' UK Forum, some even fell in love and had children! I've seen friendships that started over a shared obsession with four men in makeup turn into friendships that have lasted decades. Big, big thank you to everyone who has helped over the years including friends & family, including writing articles, helping run the site (Michelle & Dan!) to sharing photos & stories.
There have also been sad loses, including Ace Frehley, Mark St John, Bob Kulick, Danny Francis and of course members of the KISS Army including our old friend Gary Slater.
There have been some incredible moments along the way, and quite a few completely ridiculous ones too!
The site has changed enormously over the years. The design has changed. The technology has changed. The way we consume music has changed. Even KISS themselves have changed. We've had reunions, farewell tours, line-up changes, new albums, solo projects, conventions, Kruises, Vegas residency, End of the Road and, most recently, the exciting new Pophouse era.
As for myself, my life changed massively back in January thanks to someone very very special, big thank you to Faye for embracing my krazy passion for this band. November awaits!
Here's to the future of KISSin' UK, but I'm not sure it will be another 30 years!!
